GO AND DO THE SAME

In moments of crisis and life-altering decisions, abortion-determined women don’t need judgment or condemnation. They need compassionate action that will address the complex web of circumstances that make them vulnerable to irreversible, heart-shattering decisions.

This is not to absolve individuals of personal responsibility. Rather, it’s about shifting our own perspective—humbly putting ourselves in another person’s situation. We adopt a posture of love toward others because Christ loved us. We listen to women who would prefer to parent if their circumstances were different, and we empower them to choose life. And like the Good Samaritan, we open our hearts and share our resources to save lives and make right what we had no role in making wrong.

We have to be willing to be uncomfortable. This means saying, “I’m willing to invest time in getting to know this woman. I’m willing to find out what she’s dealing with and what she needs help with.” It’s saying, “I’m willing to listen without judging and show compassion for her plight. I’m willing to make a long-term commitment that may not be convenient or easy for me. I’m even willing to be let down from time to time. And even if I’m disappointed, I won’t give up. I’ll do what’s right, no matter how hard it is, for as long as it takes.”

That’s where it gets dicey for some people, and that’s why this is hard work.

Making abortion unthinkable and unnecessary will cost us something. To promote human flourishing in a world bent on human demise will take fortitude, sacrifice, and strategic planning. But if children and mothers are worth it—and I believe they are—crossing to the other side of the road is not an option.
